The Matterhorn is perhaps the most familiar mountain in the Alps, Switzerland and Italy shared the honor of having such a high global treasure mountain, Zermatt is the closest city to the Swiss side and Breuil-Cervinia in the Val Tournanche Italian side. Being the last of the great mountain range to be escalating his achievement evokes the purest sense of achievement and pain. Many were the thoughts have ventured into the slopes of the hill and some others tried in vain to ascend their crests.

An image associated with the Matterhorn, is the determination, especially of a British designer hired to mapping of alpine regions, has spent five years preparing to climb the mountain at this time and gained much recognition for her accomplishments, however, would only be awarded as s winds culminating in July 14, 1865 following the route Hörnli, but the apparent ease of the climb would give rise to terror in return.

For too long the guides of Zermatt, Breuil, travelers and hikers crossing the neck of the foot edge Theodule Furggen without daring to think that one day a man could beat the dreadful summit of Mattrehorn. In 1860 the young Edward Whympe was rapidly evolving, exploring the edge of Italian Lion which the slope is less severe, he seemed to be most favorable to their attempt to summit. In early 1861 he went in company with sole inhabitant of Valtournanche brave enough to venture. The problems first appeared in the chimney where it could continue at great cost, since his partner had given up the action, informing him that he would not go further.

The following year four new attempts are made, all without success, bad weather, difficulty in bidding or lack of courage who accompanies him.

In July 1865, the snows melted on mountain even when everything was ready for the final act. Whymper had just made an attempt in the company of Croz of Biener and Almer, and obtained a certainty, by their form and structure, the edge of Hörnle was the best way. But Michel Croz had a commitment to Whymper Chamonix and followed him. Separated from his favorite guide, Whymper making the first ascent of the needle Verte, plus a sum to his reputation. With this success gained, he decides to go to Zermatt and Matterhorn, where a disappointment to expect: Biener Almer and refuse to participate in the new Tentet. Whymper still tries to convince Carrel, but his old rival is not interested in a pathway that is not on Italian soil. At the last moment, Carrel claimed on previous contentions and Whymper is alone, without a guide Breuil that could follow.

A light of hope to replace their anger when it exposes their projects to Lord Francis Douglas, who had just arrived with his son Taugwalder. All decide to stay in Zermatt, where he had the security of favors Taugwalder, a declared supporter of the east edge. Hope replaces impatience when Hudson, Hadow and Michel Croz, returningChamonix, agreed to join the group. The next day seven determined men left for the Matterhorn. You had to go fast because the other side of the mountain, Carrel and his companions were already on their way to the summit. But Michel Croz and the old were mountaineers Taugwalder of the first force, the Rev. Hudson had already made the Mont Blanc and Mount Rose a memorable time, Douglas and Hadow were sturdy young men aged 19 and Whymper had spent over ten nights on the mountain terrible . On this night camped at about 3350 meters at the foot of the edge, and spent the night singing.

The next day, took advantage of the brilliant day and put themselves in motion. Under the command of Michel Croz, difficulties do not stop. Moreover, as expected, no serious obstacle is presented along this gigantic staircase where, before ten o'clock, the caravan arrived in the 4250 meters. Later, it was necessary to win the epaule by a more vertical climb and a long journey, gentle on the rocks of icy north face. This was just for the talent of Michel Croz, and several hours later, they walk the last winners of the top edge and the snow. Whymper and Croz get there together and the peak is achieved much more easily than they had imagined. But were they the first?

Consumed with impatience, Whymper runs over the edge, already pleased to see no trace of footprints. He leans over the abyss and on the slopes of the Italian side, he noticed the caravan of Carrel. Cries, gestures and clatter of blocks of rock that plunge into the void to make the rose realize they lost the game. The victory of Whymper and his companions is far more complete than could be expected. In front of the summits of the Alps, each one expressing his joy. Michel Croz is a flag on his shirt, he sets a picket tent. Zermatt and Breuil population delirious haste to celebrate the winners.

For an hour they leave in triumph, savoring the finest hour of their existence. Anyway, once again to fall, and just before the north face of difficult passages, they are tying. But without doubt the fate hates the excesses of glory, as one of mountaineering's most terrible dramas would unfold in a few moments later. Hadow slipped, was overthrown Croz, Hudson and Douglas were caught by the rope and slid into the abyss. With a violent emotion, the three other climbers cling to the mountains and cling to the rope. In a blunt blow it breaks, and four unlucky falls from abyss to abyss on the glacier of the Matterhorn, 1500 feet below.
